Get Your Accordion Basics Right

The accordion, a box-shaped musical instrument, is called a “box-shaped” instrument. It has a bellows, which is driven by a free-reed aerophone. This type of musical instrument has been referred to as a squeezebox. It is a type musical instrument that is related to the bandoneon.

Reeds

The heart of accordion is the reeds. Hand-tuned reeds are made from different materials. Quality of the reeds depends on the type of wood used. The quality of the reeds can also impact the longevity and quality the accordion.

Usually accordion reeds are handmade, but some are machine made. Using machine made reeds may reduce production time. Some of them perform less well than hand-made ones.

The rivets attach the reed plates to the reed tongues. The thickness of the tongue and the air-gap on the side of the tongue determine the performance of the reed. The air-gap should be minimal to avoid reducing the air-flow of the reed.

Bellows

The primary means of articulation in accordion bellows is the accordion bellows. They are made from pleated layers of cloth and cardboard. Their design and construction vary widely.

In addition to their basic shape, bellows may be arranged to form a ballistic collar that surrounds the neck. They can also be made from several piled sheets.

The basic bellows are made of leather or synthetic bindings. The inner hinges are usually made from hard linen. The external hinges are often made of sheepskin. These bellows are designed to provide air tightness, while allowing for flexibility.

The high end bellows can be made from individual skived or leather panels. These are joined by leather top hinges or hard linen bottom hinges. The bellows can have or without silk tip reinforcement.

Treble side and bass side valves

The keys control the bass and treble sides of accordion valves. The melody side is the treble side. The bass side is normally used for accompaniment.

There are two types: on/off and automatic bass switches. The latter is simpler and is often called a pre-set switch.

The treble side of an accordion is usually found on the top. It is composed of a reed block that is attached to the plate. When the bellows provide enough air pressure, the plate vibrates.

The left side houses the bass side of an accordion. The bass side is similar to the treble side except it uses rods and reed blocks.

Treble casing and bass casing

The accordions are a unique instrument that allows a player to simultaneously play melody and chords. Learning how to properly set up and use the bass and treble casings is key to getting great sounds from the instrument.

In addition to the treble and bass buttons, accordions have a bellows, which pushes air out through the reeds. Typically, bellows are made of cardboard or cloth. Sometimes bellows are attached to wooden frames.

You need to make sure that you are using the best tools and materials whether you are building or repairing an accordion. If you’re not mechanically inclined, it’s probably best to hire a professional.

Wood used in accordion construction

It may be time for you to disassemble your accordion and fix the problem. This job requires a good table, mechanical aptitude, and the willingness to use the right tools.

The first step is to clean the inside of your accordion. Use a soft cloth to clean the inside of your accordion. Then, dampen it with rubbing aloe. This will prevent the dirt from being transferred to the key rods, which can lead to a sticky key.

Having the correct leathers and valves will improve the performance of your accordion. These can be made of leather or plastic. Unlike leather, plastic is less likely to sag and curl.

Digital accordion

The digital accordion is a modern electronic instrument that simulates the sounds of an acoustic instrument. It may also be called a MIDI accordion, because it uses MIDI to transmit music. It can be connected either to a PA system or a keyboard amplifier to practice.

Some models have external sound modules to add more features. These can provide different left and right hand outputs or more synthesized sounds. The best digital accordions are those that are made by Roland.

These instruments are lightweight and can withstand professional use. They can be plugged into a computer or PA system for live performance. They are simple to set up and manage.
